561st SUPPORT BATTALION Constituted 11 February 1943 in the Army of the United States as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 561st Quartermaster Service Battalion and activated 19 March 1943 at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Redesignated 20 September 1943 as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 561st Quartermaster Battalion. Inactivated 25 June 1946 in France. Redesignated 28 March 1967 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 561st Supply and Service Battalion and allotted to the Regular Army. Activated 25 April 1967 at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Converted and redesignated 21 June 1973 as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 56lst Maintenance Battalion. Converted and redesignated 21 April 1978 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 561st Supply and Service Battalion. Reorganized and redesignated 16 August 1984 as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 561st Supply and Service Battalion. Reorganized and redesignated 16 October 1992 as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 561st Support Battalion. CAMPAIGN STREAMERS World War II Southwest Asia DECORATIONS None COAT OF ARMS SHIELD: Gules, a lion's head caboshed or, langued gules, supporting a fleur-de-lis azure, fimbriated of the second between two keys, wards up and outward chevronwise buff. CREST: None MOTTO: Best Serving the best Buff and gold (yellow) are used for Support organizations. The two keys refer to the descent from a World War II Quartermaster Battalion while the campaigns of that organization in Europe are represented by the upper half of the fleur-de-lis. The organization's baptism of fire during the Normandy campaign is suggested by the gold passant guardant lion from the Provincial Arms of Normandy. DISTINCTIVE INSIGNIA On a gold field a dark blue fleur-de-lis issuing from a gold lion's head, all between two buff keys. The motto BEST SERVING THE BEST is gold on a red scroll. The sample of the distinctive insignia was originally approved on 14 February 1969 for wear by the 561st Supply and Service Battalion.
